Le dugon ressemble à un morse et il y a eu inversion entre le petit lamantin d'Amérique et le grand lamantin du Kamtschatka (l'illustration n'est pas fidèle à la description de Buffon, correspondant à la rhytine de Steller, espèce découverte en 1741 et exterminée dès 1768). Ces deux erreurs ont été rectifiées dans l'édition publiée 10 ans plus tard (XIXp 214 t17).
